Monsoon Getaways from Mumbai - Goa Beaches
| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

The dust has finally settled and the leaves that were down and looked weathered in the summer sun with dirt and grime, look fresh and green now. The first showers of rain arrive and everything looks so fresh and clean that it seems somebody has wiped out a dusty slate with a wet cloth. The mother earth has suddenly become a playground for small rivulets and frogs that sing bass in the all toad choir. The trees sway as the wind blows and everything looks wrapped in a green foil. The Arabian Sea looks not very happy as there is hardly any soul to appreciate the beach beauty. But elsewhere it’s a different feel altogether.

Goa

Goa no wonder is magical in monsoon. In fact the monsoon experience in Goa is unparalleled anywhere else in the country. It surely is romantic in the rains - it's the cool climate, the smell of nature, and the native revelry that causes it. Rains here have a special appeal, a light drizzle or a heavy downpour, Goa goes green this time of the year. Sit in the balcony of your room and simply watch the rain gods tumble down off red tilled roofs. And there is nothing better than a hot mug of coffee and a good book to read as the skies spread their monsoon magic.

Let’s start with the beaches, while some of them become off limits; taking a stroll  down a Goa beach, with the drizzle on your back watching waves crushing the shores and your footprints in the wet sand, is Sinquerim-beachcertainly an experience you’ll cherish forever. There are a number of beaches in both South and North Goa and some of the popular beaches are Sinquerim, Candolim, Calangute, Baga, Chapora and Anjuna in North Goa (more beaches in North Goa) and Bogmalo, Majorda, Benaulim, Colva and Palolem in South Goa (more beaches in South Goa).

Fountainhead of culture

Fontainhas derives its name from 'fonte' (spring). Fontainhas, once was the cultural centre of old Panjim in the 1800s. It is known as Fontainhas Ward today. With its narrow winding streets and quaint houses, Fountainhas may have lost the moment but not its charm. Due to its historic importance, the ward has been declared a conservation area. Its Portuguese houses were recently acquired and restored by a Portuguese foundation, Fundacao Oriente. A stroll through the quarter is highly recommended.

In-land areas of Goa are what attract travellers in Monsoon and one can explore beautiful Goan villages, which are lush green and offer a wonderful experience. Old Goa is certainly the place to be in. White washed churches of Old Goa is a sight to behold and a memorable experience. Places worth checking out in Old Goa are Se Cathedral, Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Archaeological Museum, Basilica of Bom Jesus, Convent of St. Monica and Church of St. Augustine (more on Old Goa).

Aguada FortBesides beaches and churches, Goa has a good number of forts. Some of the forts worth visiting in the rains are Aguada Fort, Chapora Fort and Cabo Fort (more on Goa forts).
