Atithi Devo Bhava?
“We get upset when hotel doesn't provide facilities and services as promised or as shown in its web site. It charges double for services like - a local phone call, taxi hire etc. Hotel management is rude."
These questions are true for most medium and other class of hotels. Because 80% of tourists stay in medium or budget hotels. This opinion is based on only Indian hotels and resorts. Here some examples that tells me, how some of my good friends, in fact me too behave when we go for a trip.
Puri is a famous pilgrimage and sea beach of India. I go there twice a year with family. When we reach Puri, many cycle rickshaw pullers come around and make noise for hotels, if we go with them to any hotel, the hotel quotes high tariff.
If we ask for discount, the hotel straight away says – NO. If we stay in that hotel, we have to pay what they ask for. Or we have wander here and there to search for a hotel. If we do this, we loss our precious time and spoil our mood. This is the first step that we face when we reach any tourist place in India. Now after this when we stay in the hotel, many other issues crop up like - the hotel doesn't provide proper guideline for places of tourist interest in that city, room service is not there, good and hygienic food is not available. At the time of check out, the bill you get is not clear. There is a thankless environment and you come back with only good memories in photographs.
Manali, another good place in our country but the hotel problem same. Here we face rude behavior of taxi drivers. If we want to go Rohtang Pass they ask for very high price. Rates depend on the mood of taxi drivers and they don’t smile either. Also no proper guideline is there. Here also without having a good time we come back to our home with only photographs.
Port Blair another good place for sea beaches, islands, unforgettable sights, water sports… here again transport system is poor, no proper guideline, no proper safety. Hotel tariff is different(When we book through a travel agent or book personally).
By this we don't understand why these things are going on? Why there lack of warmth of cheerfulness. Is this made by locals or by authorities?
In my view, it is lack of nationality, and a failure of tourism promotions like Athiti devo bhava. What we can do however is to take the oath that “When any tourist comes to our city we give him/her full co-operation. Show warmth and cheerfulness, wear a smile on our face give real information and honest advice to our guest."
Also when we have some free time, this should be our basic duty to visit places tourist interest and see facilities. If things are not the way they should be, we should talk to officials or inform newspapers. The idea is to bring attention.
If we do this then any tourist who comes to visit our city will feel happy. A good word will spread around and more people will come and definetly we feel good...
