Travel anecdote: I beg your pardon : This incident happened somewhere in Maharashtra. All along the highways you will see people looking for a ride. It is normal for truckers and jeeps to ferry passengers and charge a fare for the same. In this particular instance I had given this guy a ride for about 40 kms and he was really surprised when I said no to his offer of money. On realizing that I wasn’t going to take the money, with a beaming face, he thanked me profusely in probably the only English he knew by saying “I beg your pardon, I beg your pardon”! This was somehow a touching moment and it also reminded me of another instance where I had given a lift to a few gypsy rag picking women. I was shocked out of my wits when one of the young women jumped into the front seat with me and shook my hand while parting. Made me wonder how even so called modern, liberated, broad minded individuals can also be victims of their own beliefs and assumptions!
