Getting there

By Air: Perhaps there would hardly be any city that is as well connected by air as Mumbai. There are regular flights from Mumbai to other parts of the country. The international terminal Sahar, renamed as Chatrapati Sivaji International Airport operates flights round the clock. The domestic terminal is at Santa Cruz, about 5 km apart and can easily be reached through regular shuttle buses between the two terminals.

By Road: Mumbai is well connected by a network of good roads to the rest of India. Buses for the neighbouring states ply from the State Transport Terminal located opposite Mumbai Central Railway Station. To commute with in the city, there are local trains, autos and taxies.

Sightseeing

Gateway of India:  The most popular and perhaps the first landmark that comes to mind when we think Mumbai, is the Gateway of India. It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. The Gateway of India was designed by George Wittet in the Indo-Saracenic style to symbolize the enduring nature of British Rule.

Chowpatty Beach

Chowpatty Beach:  An excellent picnic spot, Chowpatty is Mumbai's most popular beach along with Juhu. You may find families on a picnic, senior citizens on their daily walks and young couples trying to steal a few precious moments. The beach is located at the foot of Malabar hill and at the end of Marine Drive. A statue of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak stands on the beach,  on the very spot where he was cremated in 1920.

Juhu Beach: Another popular beach in Mumbai is Juhu beach, where you’ll find a carnival like atmosphere during the evenings and weekends when thousands of people flock on the beach to spend some time with friends and family.

Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai

Siddhivinayak Temple: Built in 1801, the Siddhivinayak Temple is located at Prabha Devi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh who is represented here as Siddhivinayak (the granter of all wishes). Built of black stone, the idol of Ganesh is 2’6” high and 2’ wide with the trunk on the right- an unusual feature since Ganesh is mostly represented with his trunk towards the left.

Mahalaxmi Temple: Another important temple in Mumbai is the Mahalaxmi Temple that was built in the 18th century. The temple is located on the Bhula Bhai Desai road. Though the temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, it also enshrines the Goddess Kali and Saraswati.

Marine Drive

Marine Drive: Also called Queen’s Necklace, Marine Drive is shaped like a crescent and is a 3 km promenade lined up with leafy palm trees. It is built over reclaimed land and links Nariman Point to Babulnath and Malabar Hill. The best time to visit Marine Drive is in the evening when it looks like a string of pearls.

Other places of tourist interest: Besides the places mentioned above, Mumbai has a number of other exciting places to see. Malabar Hill is the coveted area where rich and famous of the cinema and business world live.  Kamla Nehru Park offers excellent views of Marine Drive and Chowpatty. Prince of Wales Museum is another interesting place that was built to commemorate the visit of King George V (then Prince of Wales).

Nearby places

Elephanta Caves: A quick getaway from Mumbai, Elephanta Caves is A Unesco World Heritage Site. It is located in the Mumbai harbor off the coast of Mumbai and is famous for the Trimurti which shows the three faces of Shiva as almost akin to the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.

Haji Ali Dragah: Another place to visit near Mumbai is the Dragah of Haji Ali, a Muslim saint who died while on pilgrimage to Mecca. The dragah is located on a tiny islet located 500 yards from the coast. Built in 1431, the Dragah is accessible only during low tide and is connected to the Mahalaxmi temple by a narrow causeway.

Linmala Waterfall, Mahabaleshwar

Besides, the above mentioned two nearby places, there are a number of getaways from Mumabi. Lonavla and Khandala are two popular getaways located about 106 km away from Mumbai. Matheran is another beautiful escape that one can visit and so is Mahabaleshwar.
