Hyderabad, the City of Nizams in the south of India is well known for its cuisine – Hyderabadi Cuisine. But the food is not the only draw to the city, there are other popular attractions as well. Indian Premier League or IPL as it is generally called is perhaps the most exciting cricket extravaganza in the world after Cricket World Cup. Formed on the lines of English Premier League (football) and National Basket Ball (NBA) of the United States, IPL twenty20 championship was launched by Board of Control for Cricket in India. Getting there

By Air: Hyderabad is well connected to the rest of the country and world by both national and international flights. The airport is located at Begumpet, which is divided into both domestic and international terminals. The new Greenfield Airport with world-class facilities has come up at Shamshabad, about 35 km south of the existing airport at Begumpet.

By Rail: Secunderabad, the sister city of Hyderabad, is the head office of Southern and Central railways. Besides the Secunderabad railway station , the two other railway stations - the Hyderabad railway station (also known as Nampally) and Kacheguda railway station connect the city with other parts of India.

By Road: Hyderabad city is well connected by road to all the neighbouring states. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) connects Hyderabad to other parts of the state.

Birla-Mandir, Hyderabad

Birla Mandir: The beautiful Birla Mandir is situated on a hill and overlooks the city. The temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara and is primarily built of white marble. The temple is an eclectic mix of South Indian, Rajasthani and Utkal architectural styles. It took 10 years to complete. The 11ft-high statue of Lord Venkateshwara is the significant features of the temple.

Charminar: It is hard to miss Charminar, the most famous of Hyderabad’s landmarks. Charminar is an imposing granite and lime-mortar structure notable for it four towers. The name Charminar translates as ‘four towers’ or ‘four spires’. Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah built the structure back in the late 16th century.

Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad

Falaknuma Palace: Built by an Italian architect, the Falaknuma Palace is popularly known for its beautiful design. This magnificent royal structure is situated on a hill south of the old city. The building was commissioned by Nawab Vigar-ul-Umra and combines Louis XIV influences with those of the Mughal. The palace, which was basically a holiday home for the Nizam and his court, has old furniture, statues, artwork, manuscripts and books that belonged to the sixth Nizam.

Mecca Masjid: One of the country’s oldest and largest mosques, Mecca Masjid is certainly one of the most beautiful in Hyderabad. Construction of the mosque began in 1617 and it took 77 years before it was completed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Nehru Zoological Park: A good place to visit in Hyderabad is the Nehru Zoological Park, situated close to the Mir Alam Tank in Hyderabad. The zoo, a major attraction in the city covers some 300 acres and is home to close to 1,500 animals, reptiles and birds.

Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad

Ramoji Film City: Ramoji Film City is among the largest integrated film studio complexes in the world and one of Hyderabad’s most popular tourist attractions. The complex is spread over an area close to 1,666 acres. The complex is home to more than 500 set locations and has a capacity to handle the production of up to 20 international movies and 40 domestic movies at one time.

Birla Planetarium: An interesting place to visit in Hyderabad is the Birla Planetarium. It is located in the heart of the city on top of the Naubat Pahad hill and has been a popular attraction since it opened in 1985. Regular documentary shows are screened at the planetarium that covers solar system, galaxies, eclipses and UFOs.

Hussain Sagar Lake, Hyderabad
Hussain Sagar Lake: The lake connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.The Hussain Sagar Lake was built on a tributary of the Musi River by Hussain Shah Wahi during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah in 1562. On the banks of the lake a water front or bund was constructed to arrest the flow of water on the other side. The Tank Bund, as it is called is where people flock.

Sanghi Temple: Situated atop Paramanand Giri Hill, the Sanghi Temple is about 35 km from the city. The temple has a number of noteworthy features, including its magnificent gateway or Maha Dwaram, the shrine of Lord Anjaneya, the holy garden and the smaller temples dedicated to Shiva, Ganesh, Anjaneya, Padmavati and others.

Golconda Fort, Hyderabad

Golconda Fort: Just 11 km away from the city is Golconda Fort, one of the most magnificent fortress complex in India. The history of the fort dates back to the early 13th century, when this south eastern part of the country was ruled by the Kakatiyas. The bulk of the ruins of this fort, date from the time of the Qutub Shahi kings, who had ruled this area in the 16th and 17th century.
